March Madness Pre-game Pep Talk
Posted by Brian Waller on Mar 7, 2018 12:22:50 PM

Last year, Fox Business reported that U.S. employers stood to see 23.7 million employees distracted by all of the madness that the Big Dance brings. While buzzer beaters and bracket busters aren't always a welcome distraction, there's a lot to learn from some of college basketballs' greatest coaches.

Here are some of my personal favorites:

“Most people get excited about games, but I've got to be excited about practice, because that's my classroom.”  - Pat Summit (1952–2016), head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team from 1974-2012, eight-time NCAA national champion, winningest NCAA basketball coach in history

The typical Vaco partner has more than seven years in a consulting or placement capacity and started their career in the disciplines he or she serves. Your Vaco players bring the knowledge that comes from a history of successful engagements and the professional maturity to bring an open mind to understand the uniqueness of your needs. In other words, we’ve not only been running the plays for years, but we have the game time experience to make extremely educated and knowledgeable decisions.

“You can see and you can listen, but you have to have moments in which you feel.”  – Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke University Blue Devils, five-time NCAA national champion, three-time gold medalist coach of the American men’s basketball team

...or as Vaco co-founder and CEO Jerry Bostelman always says, “You can hire for a resume, and then the whole person shows up.” Matching up skillsets and experience is necessary, but personality fit is critical. That’s why taking the time to truly get to know our clients and candidates is prioity number one.

While your Vaco talent acquisition professionals employ the best technology to ensure skillset and experience fit, at the end of the day, an invested partner - someone listening, seeing, and feeling – will be the pivotal part in finding the right talent to join your team.

“What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player.” – John Wooden (1910-2010), head coach of the UCLA men’s basketball team where he won 10 NCAA national championships in 12 years

Whether a candidate or client (and they’re not mutually exclusive!), Vaco truly believes that who you are is more important than what you do. So, while you may be an extremely talented accountant, you also value work-life balance and working for an organization that has a cause greater than the bottom line. We’re going to find you the next career adventure that offers both.

You may be a project manager in dire need of developers and a QA team, but that team needs to match your zest for the work at hand and able to remotely. It’s our belief that winning teams aren’t just about meeting deadlines and ticking boxes, they are a strong combination of skill and cultural fit.

“Institutions serve people, not the other way around. So as a servant-leader, I measure my success by the success of those whom I’m serving.” - John Calipari, head coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, 2012 NCAA national champion

Though we’re extremely proud of the wins we’ve accomplished by successfully serving tens of thousands of clients, consultants and candidates, the honor we strive to achieve is serving those players time and time and time again. We’re committed to serving you through your entire career and look forward to celebrating every win along the way.

Happy March Madness, everyone!
